Chapter 9
On Tuesday Berlin worked on a grant proposal all morning and was so absorbed in it that she startled when the phone rang. She took a deep breath, lowered her pen and glanced over at the phone. Her private line was blinking. She picked up the phone before the fourth ring.
“Berlin speaking.”
“Hey, boo.”
“Reginald?” She glanced around as if someone was in her office listening. “How did you get my private line?”
“I have my ways.” She didn’t miss the hint of laughter in his voice.
“Uh-huh, I can just guess Arianna has something to do with this,” she retorted with an angry breath. She and her dear friend were going to have to have a long talk real soon. “Aren’t you supposed to be working?”
He chuckled. “I am working. Why don’t you come out of your office and have lunch with me?”
Berlin glanced over at the clock and noticed it was already after twelve. Where had the morning gone? She groaned inward. She knew where the time had gone. She had spent it hiding in her office all morning, trying to avoid him. Yesterday she had conveniently disappeared, Christmas shopping most of the evening and was relieved when she had returned home to find him gone. She had to avoid him as much as possible, which was why there was no way she was going anywhere with him for lunch no matter how tempting. “I’ve got to get this proposal done.”
“Lula’s is having a fabulous special; sweet potatoes, corn bread dressing and smoked ox tails.”‘
Now that was definitely tempting. “No. I better pass,” she said meekly.
There was a short pause. “I think you’re avoiding me.”
“No I’m not,” She retorted then abruptly hung up the phone. Hearing a knock at her door, Berlin rose then walked over to the door and swung it open. She found Reginald standing on the other side.
“Yes, you are avoiding.”
Her breath caught in her throat as she studied his features. They were the same strongly prominent features that had invaded her dreams for the last couple of days. Staring up at him, she inhaled, breathing in a scent that was warm and inviting, causing her pulse to beat rapidly.
Reginald cleared his throat, and she realized that she hadn’t breathed a word since she’d open the door.
“Invite me in, Berlin.”
She let out a breath in an audible sigh and tried to ignore the dimples he flashed. “I got work to do.”
“You can’t work all day.” He pushed past her, and as soon as the smell of food hit her nose, she noticed he was carrying two Styrofoam containers. “You can spare thirty minutes and eat lunch with me.”
Without saying a word, she moved around her desk and plopped down in her chair. Reginald took the seat across from her and pushed one of the containers in front of her.
“Why you call asking me to go to lunch if you already bought food?” she said coolly.
“Woman… just be quiet and eat,” he ordered.
She pretended to hesitate, but her stomach growled and gave her away.
